Can I ask you a question? Have you ever felt like everything in your life was about to change, and you just did not feel ready? I have been there. In fact, most of us have. Trusting God through change is probably one of the hardest things we ever do as believers, but it is also where some of the greatest growth happens in our faith and our Christian community support during adversity.
I remember sitting down for our latest "Perspectives Into Practice" podcast episode with my friend Alex, and our conversation kept circling back to this very idea. How do we choose faith instead of fear? What does it look like to really trust God when things are uncertain, including seasons of waiting for healing, trusting God through illness? I want to share some of the practical ways that are helping me and so many others to practice trusting God through change right now—even in the small details of daily life, gratitude practices for healing.
Why Trusting God Through Change Is So Hard Sometimes
Let me tell you, I do not believe anyone wakes up and says, "Give me all the big, scary changes today." Most of us love stability. We want to know what is coming next. But here is the thing. Real life just does not work that way. Seasons shift, and you can find hope in Finding God in Hard Times. Opportunities pop up that make you question everything you thought was secure. Maybe you are moving to a new city, starting over in a new job, or letting go of old comfort zones, trusting God with family decisions. Trusting God through change suddenly feels less like a sweet worship lyric and more like, "How am I supposed to do this in real life?"
In our recent podcast, we talked about those city and job changes Alex went through. That thing where your brain wants to hide and keep everything safe and predictable? I have felt that too. Our first instinct is to hunker down and protect ourselves from risk, but spiritual self-care tips and spiritual encouragement through handwritten notes can help us stay anchored. But guess what? When I try to keep everything exactly the way it was, I end up missing what God might want to do right now.
Does Trusting God Through Change Really Make a Difference?
Absolutely. I love how even small moments of brave faith can lead to bigger trust, finding faith after loss. Sometimes it is as simple as saying, "God, if you led me here, I believe you have a reason for it." That posture changes everything—not just for us but for our families, our coworkers, and our communities. When we walk in faith, even when it feels shaky, we show others what trusting God through change looks like in real life, deepening relationship with God.
Practical Ways to Start Trusting God Through Change Each Day
I know what you are thinking. "Okay, but how do I actually practice spiritual rebuilding after setbacks? trusting God through change when my nerves are shot and I can't see the next step?" Here are a few simple things I am learning. None of these are complicated, but they are powerful when you make them a habit.
1. Focus on Today, Not All the What-Ifs
Can I tell you something? The number of times I have worried about things that never happened would shock you. When changes come—big or small—I have to remind myself that God gives me grace for today, not for the hundred scenarios my mind invents. Try asking God each morning, "What do you have for me today? Help me see your hand just in these next steps." It pulls your mind out of the spiral and helps you take one real step at a time.
2. Look for God’s Fingerprints in the Details
This is something I picked up from the story Alex told on the podcast. Sometimes God's leading comes in little nudges, not giant signs. An unexpected conversation. A sense of peace even as everything else feels upside down. For Alex, it was even something as specific as finding out what the name of a new boss meant (God is gracious), which provided comfort when nothing else made sense. What about you? Where do you see God's fingerprints as you are trusting God through change?
3. Pray Honest, Simple Prayers (Even the Scared Ones)
I used to think trusting God through change meant I needed to sound confident all the time. That is just not true. Some of my best prayers sound more like, "Lord, I am scared. I want to trust you, but I do not understand." Jesus never asks us to have it all together. He just asks us to bring it to Him. Even a whispered "Jesus" in the middle of chaos is enough. He is the Prince of Peace, and His name carries what we cannot.
4. Go Back to God’s Word for Reassurance
I want to encourage you with a verse that keeps coming up for me whenever life feels uncertain: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, CSB) This is the anchor for trusting God through change. It is a promise that we are never left alone to figure things out by ourselves.
5. Take Small, Obedient Steps Even If You Are Not Sure
Change feels less scary when you break it down. What is one small act of obedience you can take today? For me, it is sometimes just reaching out to a new friend. Saying yes to an opportunity that scares me. Letting God show up as I step forward, not waiting to have 100 percent certainty first. That is what trusting God through change is—acting on what you know and trusting Him with what you don’t.
Trusting God Through Change in Everyday Moments
All this sounds great in theory, but what about the day-to-day? To be honest, sometimes it is harder for me to trust God in the simple routines than in the big transitions. Waking up tired and still believing He’s going to give energy for the day. Praying for peace when I feel anxious over small details. Choosing to let my faith show up in routines instead of putting it on a shelf for Sundays only. Trusting God through change does not stop at the big stuff. Little things matter too.
Scriptures to Hold Close When Change Feels Overwhelming
- Isaiah 41:10 (CSB) - “Do not fear, for I am with you...”
- 2 Timothy 1:7 (CSB) - “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment."
I love to keep these verses handy. When I feel my thoughts racing, repeating these simple promises reminds me that trusting God through change is not about perfection. It is about staying near to Jesus, no matter what the circumstances hold.
What To Do When Trusting God Through Change Still Feels Hard
Can I be honest? Even when we know all the right Scriptures, say all the right prayers, and want to trust, sometimes our hearts just lag behind our heads. That is okay. You are not failing at faith because you still feel worried sometimes. God can handle your questions, your uncertainty, and your need for reassurance.
Find a friend you can talk to or send a message to someone you trust from our community. Sometimes just saying, "I feel stuck, and I am trying trusting God through change but it does not feel easy” can break the isolation. We are built for connection, and your story can help someone else take a step of brave faith too.
Practical Tips to Keep Going
- Speak the name of Jesus when fear creeps in.
- Repeat your favorite verse every morning.
- Write down small ways God shows up for you each day.
- Share your journey with a friend. We grow stronger together.
- Rest in the truth that God always finishes what He starts.
Encouragement for Our Community Walking Through Change
Let me wrap this up with a little encouragement. Change is never easy, but it can be beautiful when we lean in and say, "God, I trust you right here and right now.” Our stories matter to one another, and your faith—no matter how much or little you feel you have today—is a light for someone else.
If you have not listened to the "Faith Over Fear—Trusting God in Uncertainty" episode yet, go give it a listen. We talk about real moments, real fear, and real victory in faith. I think you will feel less alone and maybe even see change in a new way.
You are not walking through this alone. Let’s keep trusting God through change together. And remember: even small shifts in perspective can lead to big changes in our lives and our world.
